Advancing Transportation Equity through Inclusive Travel Survey Data Methods
What is the quality of travel data for underrepresented, marginalized populations? The issues go deeper than creating slicker algorithms: In a world with deep-rooted systemic inequity, transportation professionals must understand contextual factors and approach data collection with sensitivity. Data from travel surveys are used to inform investments and craft urban policies. It is critical that hard-to-reach populations—such as low-income, minority, and transit-dependent people—have their travel behavior accurately reflected. The study, led by Amy Lubitow of PSU, explored the current limitations and opportunities in household travel survey methods.

Benchmarking Social Equity in Transit Performance: Economic Justice in Practice
Transit agencies often focus on ridership as a primary measure of performance: If enough people are riding transit, then the system is a success. But this viewpoint can skip over an important aspect of a transit agency’s function; that is, providing opportunity to those with little or no access to other modes of transportation. NITC dissertation fellow Torrey Lyons explores this challenge in his doctoral research project in three ways: measuring the accuracy of the "spatial mismatch" theory; developing a "Transit Economic Equity Index," and analyzing the current state of equity planning in transit through interviews with transit providers and a review of academic literature.
Dr. Torrey Lyons will be presenting this research in "The Effects of Transit and Compactness on Regional Economic Outcomes", Lightning Talk at TCS 2019 on Sept. 19 at PSU.
Webinar: Contextual Guidance at Intersections for Protected Bicycle Lanes
Tues, Oct 8th at 10 AM (PDT) with Dr. Chris Monsere and Nathan McNeil, Portland State University
Protected bike lanes are often weakest at the intersection. This research, publishing next month, employed a combination of user surveys and simulations to anticipate expected bicyclist and turning vehicle interactions and bicyclist comfort based on design type and volumes. Findings examine which types of intersection designs, ranging from protected intersection and bike signals to mixing zones, are most comfortable for a range of cyclists, while taking into account expected motor vehicle traffic. Student Spotlight: Farah Naz, University of Texas at Arlington
Farah Naz is a doctoral student at the University of Texas at Arlington. She earned an M.S. in Transportation Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts where she conducted transit related research. She worked with the Oregon Department of Transportation in the Rail and Public Transit division where she assisted in developing the Transit Network Analysis (TNA) software tool in collaboration with Oregon State University. She is currently the Vice President of the ITE student Chapter at UTA. Next week she will share insights on transportation disadvantaged populations, their travel patterns, and the viability of different modes.
